 Kenmore Bears Junior Rugby Club

Weekly newsletter 24 May 2018. Lots to cover this week, read on!

Message from the President

Hello Kenmore Bears Rugby Family.

My name is Brett Eldred and have been a member of the club for the past 7 years. Last Friday night the committee elected to accept my application for acting Club President for the immediate future. It’s a role that I consider an honour to occupy and look forward to representing a club with a strong link to Brisbane’s rugby past and assist in the club’s future growth and success.

The season is well under way with BJRU games with our teams having some great results . The pleasing thing is not only the teams playing winning rugby but the manner in which teams are approaching their games. We look forward to seeing our teams continue success in this positive manner for the season.

This coming Friday we see one of the Reds’ most dangerous players in Wallaby Samu Kerevi attending training. The visit is thanks to our club sponsor Reuben Packer Hill of McGraths Real Estate – many thanks Reuben! Samu will arrive at approximately 5:30-5:45 and will take questions from the club’s members after meeting our players for signatures and photos, before taking one lucky team for some training drills. We’ll make a few announcements over the PA when Samu arrives, if teams are able to join us for the event.

Approximate schedule of events:
5:45 – Greet Samu and Ruben
5:50 – 6:15 Meet and greet Players for photos and signatures
6:15 – 6:30 Question Time
6:30 – 7:00 Train with a team

In my first opportunity to communicate with our members as acting President, I would like to acknowledge the effort of our volunteers that allow the club and teams to operate. Firstly the committee who has worked tirelessly in the background to provide a solid platform for club. The club is well represented by a group of people that are committed to the ensure the club is well positioned to move successfully on our growth and success. Secondly, the team officials that turn up weekly to ensure our children are coached and managed superbly. Throughout the course of the season the club will be looking to increase our volunteer base to ensure our club remains a great place to play rugby and socialise with friends.

I look forward to catching up with many of you in the coming weeks to discuss our club, the season or teams. Please feel free to catch up with me around the club if you wish to raise matters.

Regards
Brett Eldred

Samu Kerevi Question Competition

We are running a competition on the club’s Facebook page and Twitter asking for questions for Samu Kerevi. If your question is picked out, you get to ask him that question yourself! Please visit https://www.facebook.com/KenmoreCentenaryRugby/ or http://twitter.com/KenmoreRugby

Volunteers!

CLUB OFFICIALS – SATURDAY/SUNDAY – We are still looking for 3 or 4 Club Officials to rotate for Saturday or Sunday game day duties. They will be required to open and close the Club, assist in the Canteen and be the representative of the Club for the day. If you think you can help out, please contact us!

Canteen Officer – A member is required to be available for deliveries to the club house during the day, and generally on a Thursday or Friday.

Featured player/team of the week

We would like to start doing a piece in the newsletter each week featuring a player and/or team from the club. If you would like to nominate a player, please email comms@kenmorerugby.com.au with the player’s name and why you would like to nominate. We’re looking for a special effort in training, or perhaps something remarkable happened in a game, or any special reason! We’ll pick one that we like each week and showcase the club talent. If you have a photo of the player, even better!

Also if you have any great photos of your kids in action on the field, we’d love to show them to everyone! Please send in your photos and we’ll put a few of them on Facebook/Twitter and in the newsletter.

Tips for a great photo:

  • Get down low – take the shot from a kneeling position. This makes the player stand out from the background.
  • Use the longest lens that you have and set to a fast shutter speed with an aperture of around 3.5 so you get a good depth of field.
  • If you’re using a phone camera, don’t zoom in too much as it degrades the quality. Generally, phones are no good for sports photography unless you get very close to the players (but watch our for our field marshals!)
  • Use burst mode or continuous shooting – get as many frames as you can and pick the best one later

Queensland Rugby Foundation Raffle

A message from Matt Horan at the Queensland Rugby Foundation:

The Queensland Rugby Foundation will be raising money for our junior clubs at the Reds v Waratahs Super Rugby match on Saturday, June 2. We’ll be doing this via the 50/50 Raffle – half of the money goes to the winner and the other half to the clubs. We’re looking for 20 volunteers to sell tickets at the match. You’ll get a ticket to the match as well, you just have to sell for an hour or so before the match and at half time.

We will distribute the funds to those clubs which assist with the selling – so if you sell $1000 worth of tickets, you’ve raised $500 for your club. So if you can provide four volunteers, you’ll be able to raise more for your club….

Volunteers will need to be adults (you’re handling cash). We will also give you 25% discount on any other tickets for the match if you want to bring anyone else.

If you think you can help, please let a club official know this weekend so that we can pass on names by next Monday, May 28.
